MKT 421 Discussion Week 5
Week 5 DQ – Over the next 10 years, what types of new technologies will organizations use to market their products and services? How does this fit in with Marketing in the Broader Context? Use your imagination for this one!
There are many exiting technologies on the cusp of mainstream adoption that will revolution marketing over the next 10 years. The first that comes to mind is wearable technology, such as Google Glass, that has just been released to the public. Glass is a pair of bifocals use feed the user with information based on their GPS location and items in their field of view. At a cost of $1,500 this technology is currently cost prohibitive to most of the population. Marketers will be able to display advertisements to people in real time. For example, if a person walks into a Nordstrom store wearing Glass, the store will have the ability to serve relevant ads to the person in real time. Many people this is an invasion of privacy, but as time goes by people will become more receptive to the concept.
Another fascinating technology is self-controlled drones. The small sophisticated flying robots are exploding in popularity and will soon become a part of our every day life. Marketers will be able to use drones to offer simulated human interaction and deliver marketing messages. For example, a food company could use a flying drone to deliver free samples of their products to individuals walking down the streets of Manhattan. This system will be much more cost effective than having a biological human perform these duties. Companies like Amazon have already been experimenting with drone technology to rapidly deliver packages to customers.
